Dinosaurs are a diverse group of reptiles belonging to the clade Dinosauria. They were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates during the Mesozoic era. This era included the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Dinosaurs first appeared during the early Triassic period. After the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event 201.3 million years ago, they became the primary animals on land.

Today, scientists divide them into two main categories. The first group is non-avian dinosaurs, which are all the extinct lineages. The second group is avian dinosaurs, which are the modern birds.

This distinction is vital because birds are actually feathered dinosaurs that evolved from theropods during the Late Jurassic.

To understand what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur, scientists look at specific skeletal traits. These shared traits are called synapomorphies. One major physical characteristic is their hip structure. Unlike many other reptiles that have a sprawling gait, dinosaurs have hind limbs held erect beneath their bodies.

This upright posture allowed for more efficient movement. Other anatomical markers include specific openings in the skull. For example, they possess a supratemporal fossa located in front of the supratemporal fenestra. They also have unique bone structures in their necks and legs. These include specific projections on the neck vertebrae and a sharp flange on the femur known as a fourth trochanter.

Dinosaurs are organized into several major taxonomic groups. These groups are defined by their physical shapes and how they ate. Ornithischia includes many herbivorous groups. This includes the armored ankylosaurians and the plated stegosaurians. It also contains ceratopsians, which had neck frills, and pachycephalosaurians, known for thick skulls.

Another major group is Saurischia. This group includes the theropods, which were mostly bipedal carnivores. It also includes the sauropodomorphs, which were mostly large, long-necked herbivores.

Some scientists have suggested a new grouping called Ornithoscelida. This would place Ornithischia closer to Theropoda than to Sauropodomorpha. This research aims to better reflect the true ancestry of these animals.

It is important to note that not all large prehistoric animals were dinosaurs. For example, pterosaurs were distantly related members of the clade Ornithodira. They did not have the erect limb posture that defines true dinosaurs. The extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs 66 million years ago during the Cretaceous–Paleogene event changed the world forever. However, the avian lineage survived, meaning dinosaurs are still a part of our modern ecosystem.
