Scientists use hip bones to group these animals. In Saurischia, the pubis bone points forward. This looks like the hips of a lizard. Other dinosaurs have a different hip shape. Those are called Ornithischia.

To understand this, you have to look at the pelvis. The pelvis is the set of bones that makes the hip. In saurischians, a bone called the pubis points forward. This bone structure is like the hips of modern lizards.

Other dinosaurs have a different hip shape called ornithischia. In those dinosaurs, the pubis bone rotates backward. This makes the hip look more like a bird's hip. This is why scientists sometimes call the other group "bird-hipped."

Harry Seeley was a scientist who first named these groups in 1888. He looked at the work of Othniel Charles Marsh from 1878. Marsh had divided dinosaurs into four different orders. These were Sauropoda, Theropoda, Ornithopoda, and Stegosauria. Seeley found a better way to sort them all. He used the hip bones to put them into two big groups. He put the Theropoda and Sauropoda into the Saurischia group.

Scientists are still learning about these groups today. In 1986, Robert T. Bakker suggested a different way to group them. He called the plant eaters "Phytodinosauria." However, later studies showed that some animals like segnosaurs were actually saurischians. In 2017, a study by Matthew Grant Baron and others suggested a new idea. They thought the groups might be organized differently. They proposed a new group called Ornithoscelida. Even with new ideas, the study of hip bones remains vital.

This classification is based on the specific shape and arrangement of the hip bones, or the pelvis. Understanding these bone structures helps paleontologists figure out how different dinosaurs are related. While the term was once used to describe an "order" of animals, most modern scientists now classify Saurischia as an unranked clade. A clade is a group that includes a common ancestor and all its descendants. This grouping remains a central part of how we study the history of life on Earth.

To understand how these animals are grouped, you must look at the pelvic structure. In saurischians, the pubis bone—one of the main bones in the hip—points forward. This anatomical setup is very similar to the hip structure found in modern lizards and other reptiles.

This is why the group is called "reptile-hipped." In contrast, the other major group, Ornithischia, has a pelvis where the pubis rotates backward. This makes the hip look more like that of a bird. This difference in bone direction is the primary way scientists distinguish these two massive lineages.

Saurischian dinosaurs include several very different types of animals. One major group is the theropods, which include many carnivorous or meat-eating dinosaurs.

Another major group is the sauropodomorphs, which were mostly herbivorous, or plant-eating, dinosaurs. Some sauropodomorphs grew to be incredibly large. Interestingly, birds are also considered part of the saurischian lineage. They belong to a specific sub-clade of theropods known as maniraptoran theropods. This means that, biologically speaking, birds are highly specialized saurischian dinosaurs.

The way we group dinosaurs has changed many times as new fossils are found. In 1888, a scientist named Harry Seeley proposed the division between saurischians and ornithischians. Before Seeley, Othniel Charles Marsh had suggested dividing dinosaurs into four orders in 1878. These were Sauropoda, Theropoda, Ornithopoda, and Stegosauria. Seeley looked at these groups and realized they could be sorted by their hips. He placed the Theropoda and Sauropoda into the Saurischia group. He also placed the Stegosauria and Ornithopoda into the Ornithischia group.

History shows that these classifications are often challenged by new evidence. In 1986, Robert T. Bakker proposed a different idea called the Phytodinosauria hypothesis. He suggested that all plant-eating dinosaurs should be grouped together. This would have put sauropodomorphs and ornithischians in one group, separate from meat-eaters. However, this idea fell out of favor when scientists discovered that segnosaurs were actually saurischian theropods. This discovery showed that the "plant-eater" connection did not reflect true biological relationships.

Recent scientific studies have even questioned the very existence of a single Saurischia group. In 2017, a study by Matthew Grant Baron, David B. Norman, and Paul M. Barrett suggested the group might be paraphyletic. A paraphyletic group is one that does not include all the descendants of a common ancestor. They proposed a new group called Ornithoscelida, which would move theropods away from sauropodomorphs.

Other researchers, such as Cau in 2018, have also supported the Ornithoscelida idea. However, other studies continue to support the traditional view that theropods and sauropodomorphs are close relatives.

Despite these debates, the study of hip anatomy remains a vital tool in paleontology. Even if the exact branches of the tree change, the physical evidence of the bones provides the map. We can see how certain traits, like the bird-like hip, appeared through convergent evolution. This happens when different animals develop similar features independently, perhaps because they eat similar foods.

Whether we use the traditional Saurischia definition or new models, these bones tell the story of how dinosaurs conquered the Earth. They help us connect the massive sauropods to the small, feathered ancestors of modern birds.
