While many Triassic reptiles had deep sockets, this specific hardening of ligaments is not found in traditional ornithischians. Their skull structure also included weight-saving holes. These holes are found on the snout, the jaw, and the back of the skull. These openings are called the antorbital, mandibular, and temporal fenestrae.

Their hip structure was also quite distinct from most dinosaurs. Silesaurids possessed a pillar-erect hip joint.

In this arrangement, the femur supports the thickened upper lip of the hip socket. This allowed for a narrow, mammal-like gait. This differs from the ball-and-socket joints found in most dinosaurs. Most dinosaurs have a rounded femur head that is deeply embedded in the socket. Additionally, silesaurids were propubic. This means their pubis, the front lower bone of the pelvis, pointed down and forward.

However, some silesaurids were the largest dinosauriforms of their era. Isolated femur bones from Tanzania and Zambia belong to silesaurids up to 2 meters in length. These African fossils date back to the Middle Triassic. Large fossils have also been found in South America from the same period. By the late Carnian, the carnivore Herrerasaurus reached a similar size.

Understanding silesaurids helps scientists track major biological shifts. The transition from the Triassic to the Jurassic involved a mass extinction event. Evidence suggests a miniaturization event occurred during this time. Early Jurassic ornithischians were generally smaller than most silesaurids.
