This herbivore lived about 191 million years ago in what is now England. Back then, the land was part of an island archipelago. This dinosaur belongs to a group called thyreophorans, which are the armored dinosaurs. Scientists have debated exactly where Scelidosaurus fits in this family for nearly 150 years. It is one of the most complete dinosaurs found in the British Isles.

This dinosaur had a very interesting way of eating and moving. It used a small, long head to bite off low, scrubby plants.

Once bitten, the plants were processed in a large gut. Scelidosaurus was mostly quadrupedal, meaning it walked on all four legs. Its hindlimbs were longer than its forelimbs. However, some dinosaur tracks in Poland suggest it might have walked on two legs too. This means it may have been better at walking on two legs than we once thought.

The dinosaur's body was built for eating plants and moving on the ground. It was largely quadrupedal, which means it walked on all four limbs. Its hindlimbs were longer than its forelimbs. However, a trackway found in the Holy Cross Mountains of Poland shows a similar animal walking on two legs. This suggests Scelidosaurus might have been more proficient at bipedalism than previously thought. It likely used its small, elongated head to bite off low, scrubby plants. The skeleton of Scelidosaurus has many specific parts that scientists study. Its vertebral column included at least six neck vertebrae and seventeen dorsal vertebrae. The sacral vertebrae, which connect to the hips, included four bones. The tail was relatively short, representing about half of the total body length. The torso was taller than it was wide. To keep the hip and tail area stiff, the dinosaur had many ossified tendons. These are bony structures that help provide stability to the body.

One of the most striking features was its light armor. This armor consisted of osteoderms, which are bony scutes embedded in the skin.

These scutes were arranged in horizontal, parallel rows along the neck, back, and tail. Most were oval-shaped with a high keel, or a raised ridge, on the outside. There were three large rows of these scutes along each side of the torso. On the tail, there were four rows of large scutes. These structures are similar to the bony plates found in modern crocodiles or armadillos.

Scientists have spent a long time trying to understand the skull of Scelidosaurus. The head was small, about twenty centimeters long, and shaped like a triangle when viewed from above. The skull featured five pairs of fenestrae, which are openings in the bone. These included the nostrils and the eye sockets. The upper temporal fenestrae were very large, round openings. These openings served as attachment areas for the powerful muscles used to close the jaws. The snout was flat on top and formed largely by the nasal bones.

The history of discovering Scelidosaurus is quite long. Fossils were first found in the 1850s in the Charmouth Mudstone Formation in Dorset, England. The comparative anatomist Richard Owen named and described the dinosaur in 1859. He named the only valid species, Scelidosaurus harrisonii, in 1861. Even though it was found long ago, a modern description of the animal did not materialize until 2020. This recent work was provided by David Bruce Norman. He identified unique traits in the skull that help define the species.
