Later, in 1889, Richard Lydekker gave it the new name Temnodontosaurus. He noticed its teeth were very different from other species.

A third species is Temnodontosaurus crassimanus. This animal was found near Yorkshire, England. Some researchers have also studied Temnodontosaurus zetlandicus. Because of complex evolutionary relationships, the genus is currently considered a polyphyletic taxon. This means it is an unnatural grouping that may need future revision.

This was the first ichthyosaur to be scientifically described. A local man named Henry Hoste Henley bought the fossils for £23. He later passed them to the naturalist William Bullock. Bullock's collection was eventually sold to the Natural History Museum in London for about £47. The specimen is still kept there today as NHMUK PV R 1158.

Early scientists struggled to understand what this creature actually was. Sir Everard Home wrote about the specimen between 1814 and 1819. He initially thought it was a crocodile. He later changed his mind several times. He even suggested it might be a fish or related to a platypus. In 1819, he proposed the name Proteosaurus. In 1822, William Conybeare assigned the fossils to the genus Ichthyosaurus. It was not until 1889 that Richard Lydekker suggested the new genus name Temnodontosaurus. He did this because the teeth were so different from other species.

Finding these fossils provides important data about prehistoric life. For example, researchers have studied very complete skeletons to understand their anatomy. They estimate that Temnodontosaurus had more than 40 presacral vertebrae. This refers to the bones in the spine located before the sacrum. The scale of these animals is truly massive. While not as large as some Triassic forms, they were still giants of the sea. Even a single tooth can provide clues about their diet and biology. In 1960, it was noted that the original holotype tooth for the species was lost.

Because of this loss, scientists had to designate a new specimen. They chose NHMUK PV OR 2003* as the neotype for Temnodontosaurus platyodon. This specimen was also discovered by Mary Anning in 1832. She sold it to Thomas Hawkins, who later sold it to the museum for £210. Studying these fossils helps us understand how marine reptiles evolved. It also shows how much we can learn from the fossil record. New studies, like those in 2023, continue to re-evaluate how these species are classified. The study of Temnodontosaurus remains a vital part of paleontology.
