There were many different kinds of plesiosauroids with different sizes. The group called Elasmosauridae had very long, flexible necks and tiny heads. In contrast, the Polycotylidae had short necks and large heads. Sizes varied a lot between these groups. For example, Trinacromerum was about three meters long. However, a type called Mauisaurus could grow to twenty meters. Some researchers also found evidence that they were warm-blooded. This means they could make their own body heat to live in cold water.

We also know how they cared for their young. For a long time, people thought they laid eggs on land like sea turtles. However, a fossil found on a Kansas ranch in 1987 changed this idea. This fossil was a pregnant Polycotylus latippinus. It proved that they gave birth to single, large, live babies. This is very different from many other sea reptiles that lay many small eggs. This discovery helps us understand how these amazing creatures lived their lives in the deep ocean.

A less understood group called the Cimoliasauridae included small forms from the Cretaceous. In recent scientific classifications, the Polycotylidae are also included in this clade. Unlike most others, Polycotylidae had large heads and short necks. Scientists have also identified a more exclusive group called Cryptoclidia. This group was defined in 2010 by researchers Hilary Ketchum and Roger Benson. It includes the last common ancestor of *Cryptoclidus eurymerus* and *Polycotylus latipinnis* and all its descendants.

Our understanding of these creatures comes from a long history of fossil discoveries. In the early 19th century, Mary Anning found the first complete plesiosauroid skeletons in England. These were among the first fossil vertebrates described by science.

One of the most surprising discoveries involves how they reproduced. For a long time, people thought they crawled onto land to lay eggs like sea turtles.
