While it might belong to *Liopleurodon*, there is not enough information to be sure. In 1873, Henri Émile Sauvage officially coined the genus name *Liopleurodon*. He based his classification on three different teeth. The holotype tooth for *L. ferox* was found in Le Wast, near Boulogne-sur-Mer. This tooth, numbered BHN 3R 197, is kept in the Lille Natural History Museum.

Over the years, many scientists debated whether *Liopleurodon* was a separate genus or part of *Pliosaurus*. In 1905, John Frederick Blake recommended reinstating the name *Liopleurodon* because its bones were unique.

Fossil evidence for *Liopleurodon* is found in several locations around the world. Most specimens are known from Europe, particularly England and France. Fossils have also been found in Germany. While it was a large predator, it was not the giant depicted in television shows. Understanding the true scale of these animals helps paleontologists reconstruct the energy needs of ancient marine life.
