These layers were deposited as sediment on a shallow seabed during the Jurassic period. This period occurred approximately 210 to 195 million years ago. Finding fossils required careful timing and bravery. Anning often worked during the winter months. During this season, rain made the cliffs unstable. This instability caused landslides that exposed new fossils. She had to collect these specimens quickly before the sea washed them away. 
Anning made several groundbreaking discoveries that defined her career. When she was twelve years old, she helped find the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton. Her brother Joseph found a four-foot skull in 1811. Mary found the rest of the skeleton later, which was over five yards in length. She also discovered the first two nearly complete plesiosaur skeletons. Furthermore, she located the first pterosaur skeleton found outside of Germany. 
Her observations provided essential clues for biological and geological theories. Anning played a key role in identifying coprolites. At the time, these were known as bezoar stones. She helped prove that coprolites were actually fossilised faeces. This helped scientists understand the diet and lives of ancient creatures. Her expertise was so respected that she was consulted on issues of anatomy. Even though she was a woman, her reputation grew in scientific circles across Britain, Europe, and America.
Anning's life was shaped by significant personal and financial challenges. She was born on 21 May 1799 to Richard and Mary Moore Anning. Her father was a cabinetmaker who also mined fossils to help the family. The family faced extreme poverty and food shortages due to the Napoleonic Wars. The price of wheat nearly tripled between 1792 and 1812. After her father died in 1810, the family fell into debt and relied on poor relief. As a woman, Anning could not join the Geological Society of London. She often struggled to receive full credit for her scientific contributions.
Despite these barriers, her work reached the scientific community. In 1820, a collector named Thomas James Birch held an auction. He sold fossils he had bought from the Annings to help them pay rent. 
Mary Anning's legacy is a bridge between early collecting and modern palaeontology. She moved the study of fossils from a hobby into a rigorous science. Her ability to identify complex skeletons changed the way we view the timeline of Earth. She lived a life of intense curiosity and perseverance. She died on 9 March 1847. Today, her unusual life story continues to attract interest from historians and scientists alike.
