She spent her life searching for clues about the ancient past. Her work helped change how people thought about the history of the Earth.

She lived in a seaside town called Lyme Regis in Dorset. This area is part of the beautiful Jurassic coast. Many people now know her as a pioneer of science.

Finding fossils was a difficult and dangerous job.

Mary looked for fossils in the Blue Lias and Charmouth Mudstone cliffs. These cliffs are made of layers of limestone and shale. These layers formed on a shallow seabed millions of years ago. During the winter, rain made the cliffs very unstable. This caused landslides that could happen at any time. These slides were helpful because they exposed new fossils. However, Mary had to work quickly before the sea washed them away.

Mary began her great work at a very young age.

When she was twelve, she helped find a famous skeleton. Her brother Joseph first found a large skull in 1811. A few months later, Mary found the rest of the skeleton. This was an ichthyosaur, a huge creature that lived in the sea.

She also discovered the first two nearly complete plesiosaur skeletons. These were long-necked animals from the prehistoric era. She even found the first pterosaur skeleton found outside of Germany.

Mary's discoveries helped scientists understand many different things.

She helped prove that coprolites were actually fossilized dung. She also found that belemnite fossils had ink sacs inside them. These ink sacs are like the ones used by modern cephalopods. Even though she was a woman, she became famous in science. In 1820, a collector named Thomas James Birch held an auction. He sold her fossils to help the family pay their rent. This auction helped bring even more attention to her amazing work.

Mary's life was full of both wonder and hard times.

She grew up in a family that sold fossils to tourists. Her father, Richard, was a carpenter who also mined the cliffs. Life was not always easy for the Anning family. They often struggled with money and lived in a crowded town. Despite these challenges, Mary never stopped exploring the cliffs. Today, her life story is a very important part of science history.
