Charles Darwin was a famous English scientist who changed how we see life.

He was a naturalist, which means he studied nature. He was also a geologist and a biologist. Darwin is most known for his work in evolutionary biology. He suggested that all living things come from a common ancestor. This idea is now a fundamental part of science. It helps us understand how life is connected on Earth.

Darwin explained how life changes through a process called natural selection.

This is a way where nature chooses which traits help a living thing survive. He compared this to artificial selection, which is how humans breed animals for specific traits. In nature, the struggle to stay alive acts like a filter. Living things with helpful traits are more likely to survive and have babies. Over a long time, these small changes add up. This leads to the branching patterns of evolution we see today.

His big ideas grew from a long journey on a ship.

In 1831, Darwin joined the HMS Beagle for a five-year voyage. The ship traveled to chart the coast of South America. Darwin was a novice in many areas, but he collected many specimens. He studied rocks and fossils while the ship surveyed the coasts. He found huge fossil bones of extinct mammals in Patagonia. These fossils helped him think about how species change over time.

Darwin worked hard to prove his theories with many books.

He published his first scientific work about coral reefs in 1842. In 1853, he won the Royal Medal for his work on barnacles. His most famous book, On the Origin of Species, came out in 1859. He also wrote about humans and orchids in later years. In 1871, he wrote The Descent of Man to discuss human evolution. His very last book was about the actions of worms in 1881.

Today, we use Darwin's ideas to understand all living things.

His discovery is called the unifying theory of the life sciences. It explains both the unity and the many different types of life. While some people originally disagreed, most scientists now accept evolution as fact. This happened as the modern evolutionary synthesis grew between 1930 and 1950. Darwin's work remains one of the most influential in human history. He is even buried in the famous Westminster Abbey.
