He also wrote about humans and orchids in later years. In 1871, he wrote The Descent of Man to discuss human evolution. His very last book was about the actions of worms in 1881.

He explained this by comparing it to artificial selection, which is selective breeding used by humans. In natural selection, the struggle for existence acts as the driving force. Individuals with traits suited to their environment are more likely to survive. These survivors pass their helpful traits to the next generation. Over vast amounts of time, these small changes create a branching pattern of evolution. This process explains how new species emerge from older ones.

Darwin's scientific journey began with a diverse and sometimes difficult education. He first studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1825. However, he found the medical lectures dull and the practice of surgery distressing. He spent much of his time studying natural history instead. He even learned taxidermy from John Edmonstone, a Black Briton from Demerara. Later, he attended Christ's College, Cambridge, to study for a degree. There, he became a close follower of the botany professor John Stevens Henslow.

In 1831, Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage aboard the HMS Beagle.

The expedition was intended to chart the coastline of South America. Darwin served as a naturalist, collecting specimens and making detailed observations. He suffered from severe seasickness during the long journey. Despite this, he kept copious notes on geology and zoology. While in Patagonia, he discovered fossil bones of extinct mammals. He identified these as belonging to the gigantic Megatherium. These fossils suggested that species could go extinct and be replaced.

Darwin's observations led him to devise his theory of natural selection in 1838. He spent many years conducting extensive research to support his ideas. In 1858, Alfred Russel Wallace sent Darwin an essay describing the same concept. This prompted a joint presentation of their theories to the Linnean Society of London. Darwin then published his most famous work, *On the Origin of Species*, in 1859.

Throughout his career, Darwin published many important scientific books. In 1842, he published *The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs*. He also won the Royal Medal in 1853 for his research on barnacles. Later, he explored complex topics like coevolution in *Fertilisation of Orchids* (1862). He also studied human evolution and sexual selection in *The Descent of Man* (1871). His work even touched on early psychology in *The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals* (1872). His final book, published in 1881, focused on the actions of worms.
