In 1841, he coined the term Dinosauria to describe a specific group of Mesozoic land-reptiles. The name comes from the Greek words *deinos*, meaning "fearfully great," and *sauros*, meaning "lizard." He used three specific genera to define this group: the carnivore Megalosaurus, the herbivore Iguanodon, and the armoured Hylaeosaurus. To help the public visualize these creatures, Owen worked with Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins to create life-sized models.

These models were displayed at the Crystal Palace in south London. Owen even hosted a dinner for 21 scientists inside a hollow concrete Iguanodon model in 1853.

He was the first to describe the Venus' Flower Basket sponge, known as *Euplectella*. Owen also studied Brachiopoda, which helped settle how those animals are classified. In 1852, he identified *Protichnites*, which are the oldest known footprints found on land. He correctly guessed these tracks were made by an extinct arthropod long before the animal's fossils were actually found.

Owen's expertise also extended to mammals and fossils from across the globe.

He studied fossil bones from New South Wales, Australia, which provided data on extinct species. His opponent, Thomas Huxley, used anatomical demonstrations to challenge Owen's claims about human and ape brain differences.
