During his time in South America, he spent four years charting the Rio Negro. However, a sad thing happened on his way back to the UK in 1852. The cargo on his ship caught fire, and he lost almost all his specimens. He had to spend ten days in an open boat before being rescued. Even after this loss, he stayed busy writing books about his travels. In 1869, he published *The Malay Archipelago*, which is still highly regarded today.

Wallace's work connects to many things we study in school today. He was one of the first people to worry about how humans affect the environment. He also wondered if there was life on other planets. They were eventually rescued by the brig *Jordeson*. Despite this loss, Wallace remained productive. He wrote several academic papers and books, including *The Malay Archipelago* in 1869.

Beyond biology, Wallace was a dedicated social activist. He was critical of the social and economic systems in 19th-century Britain.
