His work helped define how we study fossils in America today.

Cope's journey into science began when he was a young boy. He grew up in a large stone house called Fairfield in Philadelphia.

His father wanted him to be a gentleman farmer instead. Edward found farming to be dreadfully boring. He used the money from his farm to pay for his own science studies. He even studied at the University of Pennsylvania to learn anatomy.

In the 1860s, Cope traveled through Europe to see famous museums.

During this trip, he met a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh in Berlin. At first, the two men liked each other very much. They even stayed together for several days while touring the city. They shared fossils and wrote letters to each other for a long time. However, this friendship later turned into a famous and intense rivalry.

This rivalry between Cope and Marsh is known as the Bone Wars. The two men competed fiercely to find and name new fossils. They spent many years making trips to the American West to find bones. Cope often worked with U.S. Geological Survey teams to find these treasures. This competition was very intense and lasted for many years. It was a hard job that required a lot of travel and work. Cope eventually faced money troubles after some failed mining projects in the 1880s.

Cope was an incredibly busy scientist who wrote a huge amount. He published 1,400 scientific papers during his lifetime.

He discovered and named more than 1,000 different types of animals. This included hundreds of different fishes and many different dinosaurs. Even though his work was sometimes debated by others, he remained a leader in his field. He lived a life full of discovery until he died in 1897. His many findings still help scientists understand the history of life.
