Edaphosaurus was a very important animal from the distant past.

It lived during the Late Carboniferous and Early Permian periods. This was about 303.4 to 272.5 million years ago. It was one of the first large, four-legged land animals to eat plants. Scientists call these plant-eaters herbivores. They lived in places we now call North America and Europe.

These creatures were quite large and heavy. Some species could weigh over 300 kg. They were very different from the predators that lived at the same time.

This animal had a very special way of eating.

Its head was small and triangular. It had teeth along the front of its jaws to bite plants. Inside its mouth, it had dense batteries of peglike teeth. These were called tooth plates because they were so thick. The animal moved its jaws from the front to the back to grind food. This helped it break down tough plant material. It likely had a large gut filled with helpful bacteria to help digest its meals.

One of the most famous parts of Edaphosaurus was its sail.

This sail sat on its back and was held up by long bones. These bones are called neural spines. The spines were connected by tissue to form the sail. Unlike the famous Dimetrodon, the spines on Edaphosaurus had small cross-bars. Scientists have many ideas about why it had a sail. It might have helped with body temperature or helped it show off. Some even thought it could help the animal sail on water.

An American scientist named Edward Drinker Cope first described it.

He found the first fossils in the Texas Red Beds in 1882. He gave it the name Edaphosaurus, which means "pavement lizard." This name refers to the thick tooth plates in its mouth. Later, fossils were found in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and even Germany. Other scientists like Alfred Romer and Llewellyn Price found more species in 1940. They named a species Edaphosaurus boanerges, which means "thunderous orator."

You can think of Edaphosaurus as a very old relative of modern animals.

It was a synapsid, which is a group of animals that includes our own ancestors. While it looked a bit like a lizard, it was part of a different family tree. It grew much more slowly than the predators of its time. This slow growth suggests it had a lower metabolism. A metabolism is the way a body uses energy to live. Even though it was different, it was a key part of the ancient world.
