Microsaurs were a large group of ancient animals. They lived a very long time ago. These animals lived during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. They belonged to a group of creatures called lepospondyls.

Microsaurs were the most diverse group in that category. This means they had many different kinds of species. Scientists used to group them in a specific way. Now, many researchers use the name as a collective term. This covers the group of animals originally called microsaurs.

These animals had many different ways of living. Most microsaurs had short tails and small legs.

Some looked like lizards and lived on dry land. Other kinds were built for burrowing into the dirt. Some microsaurs lived their whole lives in the water. They kept their gills even when they were adults. This is a way of life like the modern axolotl. Their skeletons were heavily ossified, which means they had very hard bone. They likely grew in a slow and steady way.

Scientists have studied these creatures for many years. They use fossils to learn about their history.

Researchers like Pardo and others have looked at their shapes. A study in 2017 looked at how they were related. This study placed some microsaurs into a group called Amniota. This helps us understand how they fit into the tree of life. Finding these fossils is a big job for paleontologists. It helps us see how life changed over time.

We find microsaur fossils in many different places.

They lived in Europe and North America. In the United States, they were in Arizona and Texas. You can also find them in Oklahoma, Ohio, and Illinois. They lived in Kansas and Nebraska too. In North America, some were found in Nova Scotia. In Europe, they lived in Germany and the Czech Republic. Some remains were even found in the Vladimir Oblast of Russia.

These fossils tell us how long they survived.

The remains in Russia might be the youngest records. This could mean they lived for 20 million more years. Some fossils in Gansu Province, China, show a possible record in the Triassic. This shows how far their reach went. Studying these fossils is like solving a giant puzzle. It connects the ancient past to the world we see today. We learn how small animals once filled the Earth.
