Microsaurs were a group of small animals from long ago.

They lived during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. This was a very long time ago. These animals had short tails and small legs. But they were all very different.

Some microsaurs looked like lizards. They were good at living on dry land. Other microsaurs lived in the dirt. They were forms that could burrow. Some microsaurs never left the water. They kept their gills, which are parts used to breathe in water. They were like the modern axolotl. Their skeletons were made of hard bone.

We find their remains in Europe and North America. In North America, they lived in places like Arizona and Texas. They also lived in Kansas and Nebraska. In Europe, they lived in Germany and the Czech Republic. Some remains were found in Russia. These might be the youngest records of microsaurs. This could mean they lived for 20 million more years. Some fossils in China also show they may have lived in the Triassic period.
