Lepospondyls were a group of early animals with four legs.

They lived a long time ago. Most lived in Europe and North America. They lived from the Carboniferous period to the Permian period. One type lived even later in Morocco.

These animals came in many shapes. Some looked like lizards. Others looked like newts or eels. Some even looked like snakes because they had no legs. Most were small. One kind, called Diplocaulus, grew to be one meter long.

Scientists study their bones to learn about them. Lepospondyls had special back bones called vertebrae. These bones were shaped like small tubes. They grew around a rod in the body. The top part of the bone was often fused to the main body.

Experts still argue about how they are related to animals today. Some think they are related to modern amphibians. Other scientists think they are closer to reptiles. This is because their place in the family tree is not yet certain.
