The Plesiosaurus was a large marine reptile from the Early Jurassic period.

It is a famous member of a group called Plesiosauria. This group is named after this specific animal. It lived in the oceans a very long time ago. The creature had a very unique body shape. It had a small head and a long, slender neck.

Its body was broad, much like a turtle. It also had a very short tail. This animal is a great example of an ancient sea reptile.

This reptile moved through the water using four large paddles.

These paddles were long and helped it swim. The neck might have acted like a rudder to help it steer. Its jaws were shaped like a U. This shape helped it catch food. The teeth were simple, needle-like cones.

These teeth were slightly curved and very sharp. They could catch clams, snails, fish, and belemnites. Because a long neck might make it hard to speed up, it may have waited for prey to swim close.

People first found these fossils in England.

A famous fossil hunter named Mary Anning found a nearly complete skeleton. She found it in December 1823 near Lyme Regis in Dorset. This was in the rocks of the Lias Group. Other fossils were found in that area for many years. These finds excited people in 19th-century England. Even though other remains were used earlier, Anning's find is the most important one.

Scientists have given the animal a special name. William Conybeare and Henry De la Beche named it in 1821. The name Plesiosaurus means "near lizard" in Greek. They chose this because it looked more like a normal reptile than the Ichthyosaurus. The main species is called Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus.

This species was described by Conybeare in 1824. It grew to be a moderately sized animal. It lived in the Sinemurian stage of the Early Jurassic.

We can learn a lot by looking at its bones. The neck had about 40 vertebrae, which are the bones in the spine.

Its front paddles were longer than its back paddles. The skull was narrow and had circular eye sockets. Scientists even think these animals gave live birth in the water. This is similar to how sea snakes behave today. Studying these fossils helps us see how life worked in the ancient ocean.
