Temnodontosaurus was a huge sea reptile from a long time ago. Its name means "cutting-tooth lizard."

This animal lived during the Lower Jurassic period. You can find its fossils in Europe or maybe in Chile. It was one of the largest known ichthyosaurs.

An ichthyosaur is a type of reptile that lived in the sea. This creature was very special because of its size and its body. It was a large member of a group called parvipelvians.

This animal had a body built for swimming in the ocean. It had flippers instead of legs to move through the water. It also had a fin on its tail to help it steer.

One of its most amazing parts was its eyes. The eye sockets were wider than they were tall. This means it likely had the largest eyes in the whole animal kingdom. Their eyes might have been as big as the eyes of a colossal squid. It also had a long snout filled with sharp teeth for eating.

People first found these fossils in the cliffs of England. Around 1810, Joseph Anning found a complete skull on a cliff.

His sister, Mary Anning, found the rest of the skeleton in 1812. A man named Henry Hoste Henley bought the fossils for £23. Later, the fossils went to a museum in London. This was the very first ichthyosaur to be described by scientists. It was a big moment for the study of old bones.

Scientists spent many years trying to name this creature. Sir Everard Home wrote about it between 1814 and 1819. At first, he thought it might be a crocodile. He even thought it might be a fish or like a platypus.

In 1822, William Conybeare called it Ichthyosaurus platyodon. The name platyodon means "flat teeth" in Ancient Greek. Later, in 1889, Richard Lydekker gave it the new name Temnodontosaurus. He noticed its teeth were very different from other species.

There are a few different types of Temnodontosaurus that scientists recognize. One type is called Temnodontosaurus trigonodon.

Its name comes from the triangular shape of its teeth. Another type is Temnodontosaurus crassimanus, which was found near Yorkshire.

Scientists are still studying these fossils today to learn more. They use new research to see how these animals are related. Even though they lived long ago, they still teach us about life on Earth.
