Nothosaurus was a special kind of reptile from a long time ago.

Its name means "false lizard" in Ancient Greek. These animals lived during the Triassic period. This was about 245 to 228 million years ago. They lived in a huge area called the Tethys Ocean. We can find their fossils in places like China, Europe, and North Africa. They are the most well-known members of the nothosaur order.

These reptiles lived a life that was similar to a seal today.

Most Nothosaurus were about 4 meters long. Some larger species, like N. giganteus, could reach 10 meters. To move through the water, they used their tails and legs. They also had long, webbed toes to help them swim. They used these parts to steer and push themselves along. Some might have even had a fin on their tail.

Finding food was a very important part of their day.

A Nothosaurus had a broad and flat skull. It had long jaws filled with sharp, needle-like teeth. These teeth helped them catch fish and other sea creatures. In 2014, scientists found tracks in China that tell a story. These tracks look like paddle marks in the soft seabed. It seems they used a rowing motion to stir up creatures hiding in the mud.

Scientists have studied many different types of Nothosaurus over the years.

The first type, N. mirabilis, was named in 1834. Many other species were found in Germany, Israel, and the Netherlands. Some species were found in the Muschelkalk, which is a type of rock. Researchers like Klein and Albers studied how these animals were related in 2009. Later, in 2014, a study by Liu and others looked at the whole family. This helped scientists understand how to group these reptiles correctly.

Nothosaurus looked a bit like animals called plesiosaurs. Plesiosaurs lived much later than the Nothosaurus. Some plesiosaurs had very short necks, like the Liopleurodon. Others had very long necks, like the Cryptoclidus. The Cryptoclidus was a fish eater with a neck 6 meters long. While Nothosaurus looked similar, it was not as well suited for life in the ocean as the plesiosaurs were. They were still very successful hunters in their own way.
