Ichthyosauria is a group of large extinct marine reptiles. People often call them ichthyosaurs. These amazing animals lived in the ocean for a very long time. They first appeared about 250 million years ago. Some species lived until about 90 million years ago.

They were very important parts of the ancient sea. They thrived during much of the Mesozoic era.

These reptiles evolved from land reptiles that returned to the sea. This is a great example of convergent evolution. That means different animals develop similar traits to solve the same problems. It is a lot like how whales and dolphins evolved later. Ichthyosaurs had limbs that turned into flippers for swimming.

Some species even had a fin on their backs. They had large eyes to help them dive deep into the water. Their tails were shaped for powerful swimming strokes.

Scientists began to learn about them in the early 19th century. The first complete skeletons were found in England.

In 1811, Joseph Anning found a complete skull in Lyme Regis. His brother Joseph Anning found the torso of that same animal in 1812.

Later in the 1800s, many fossils were found in Germany. These fossils were special because they showed soft parts of the body. In 1834, the official name Ichthyosauria was given to the group.

Many different kinds of ichthyosaurs lived in the past. There are now over fifty known genera.

These animals were not dinosaurs. They were part of a different group of reptiles. Some species had small, pointy teeth for catching tiny prey. Other species had large, bladed teeth to hunt bigger animals. They were warm-blooded and breathed air just like we do. They even had a layer of blubber to stay warm.

Finding these fossils changed how people thought about the world. In the 1800s, the news of these finds captured everyone's imagination. Some people thought they were monsters. Others wondered if they were still alive in the deep sea.

Geologists like Charles Lyell thought the Earth was very old. This helped people understand the immense span of time in history. Today, we look at their bones to learn about life long ago. We can see how they once ruled the ancient oceans.
