Mosasaurs were huge reptiles that ruled the oceans long ago.

They lived during the Late Cretaceous period. This was a time when the seas were warm and shallow. These animals were the top predators in the water. This means they were the main hunters in their environment. They lived after other large hunters, like ichthyosaurs, went extinct. Eventually, the K-Pg event happened about 66 million years ago. This event caused the mosasaurs to go extinct as well.

These animals were built perfectly for swimming through the sea. Their bodies were long and streamlined, much like modern monitor lizards. Instead of legs, they had short limb bones that formed paddles. Webbing stretched between their finger and toe bones to help them move. Their tails were broad and very strong. Many advanced mosasaurs had a large fluke on their tail. A fluke is a flat, crescent-shaped part like a shark's tail. They used these flukes to push themselves forward with great power.

Scientists first found mosasaur fossils in 1764. These remains were in a limestone quarry at Maastricht. This place is on the Meuse river. The name "mosasaur" comes from the Latin word for the Meuse and the Greek word for lizard. For a long time, people thought they had crests on their backs. They thought these were part of their necks. Later, scientists realized these were just mistakes in the old bones.

Mosasaurs had many different sizes and types. The smallest was called Dallasaurus turneri, and it was very short. The largest was Mosasaurus hoffmannii. It could grow up to 50 feet long.

They had special jaws that could bend like a snake's. This helped them swallow prey almost whole. They ate many things, including fish and ammonites. Ammonites were creatures with shells. Some mosasaurs even had blunt teeth to crush those shells.

Learning about mosasaurs helps us understand how life changes. We can see how they adapted to the water. They likely gave birth to live young in the open ocean. This is different from sea turtles that lay eggs on land. We also know they were likely endothermic. This means they were warm-blooded and could control their body heat. They might have had dark backs and light bellies to hide. This pattern is called countershading, and sharks use it too.
