Najash

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Najash was a very special kind of snake. It lived a long time ago in a place called Patagonia. This area is in the Rio Negro Province of Argentina. Najash lived during the Late Cretaceous period. It lived roughly 90 million years ago. This snake is an extinct genus. That means it is no longer alive today. It is an important part of the history of snakes.

This snake looked different from the snakes we see today. Most snakes do not have any legs at all. Najash had well-developed hindlimbs. These were back legs that grew outside its rib cage. It also had a pelvis. The pelvis is a set of bones that connects the legs to the spine. It even had a sacrum. The sacrum is a bone made of several fused vertebrae. Modern snakes do not have a pelvis or a sacrum.

Scientists found the fossils of Najash in the ground. They found them in the Candeleros Formation. This is a terrestrial place, which means it was on land. Researchers described this fossil in the year 2006. They studied the skull and the spine of the animal. These parts show primitive features. These features look like other snakes from that time. One example is a snake named Dinilysia patagonica.

Najash was a hunter that lived on the land. Its skull shape tells us how it moved its jaw. It could not swallow very large prey. It lacked the traits of macrostomatan snakes. Those are snakes that can eat huge meals. Instead, Najash likely ate small vertebrates. These are animals with backbones. It probably ate small lizards. It might have eaten micro-mammals or dinosaur hatchlings.

We can learn a lot by looking at Najash. It helps us see how snakes changed over time. Its body shows how snakes evolved from lizard-like ancestors. Scientists use a snake tree to show these links. Najash is an early offshoot on that tree. This means it branched off early. It sits outside of all living snakes. It is a unique piece of the puzzle of life.
