Najash

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A long time ago, a special snake lived in Argentina. This snake is named Najash. It lived about 90 million years ago. Scientists found its fossils in a place called the Candeleros Formation.

Najash was different from snakes today. Most snakes do not have legs. But Najash had well-developed hindlimbs. These were back legs that grew outside its ribs. It also had a pelvis. The pelvis is a set of bones that connects the legs to the spine. Najash also had a sacrum. This is a bone made of several joined parts. Modern snakes do not have these parts. Other fossil snakes found in the sea also lacked a sacrum. This makes Najash very unusual.

Najash was likely a hunter. Its skull tells us how it moved its jaw. It could not swallow very large prey. Instead, it probably ate small animals. It may have eaten small lizards. It might have eaten tiny mammals or baby dinosaurs. These animals lived near it at that time. Najash was an early branch on the snake tree of life.
