Long ago, special reptiles lived in the sea. They belong to a group called Pleurosauridae. This name means "side lizard." These animals lived in Europe during the Jurassic period.

Most pleurosaurs had very long bodies. They looked like snakes. Their limbs, or legs, were quite small. These small legs helped them live in the ocean. They swam using a way called anguilliform locomotion. This means they moved their bodies in waves to swim.

Scientists study two main types. One is Palaeopleurosaurus. It lived in Germany. Its skull was like other lizards. The other type is Pleurosaurus. It lived in Germany and France. Its skull was very different from other lizards. Some studies also include Vadasaurus and Derasmosaurus. However, those two do not have such long bodies. These sea lizards are now extinct. This means they do not live on Earth anymore.
