Ophthalmosaurus was a medium-sized sea reptile. It lived a long time ago. This was during the Jurassic period. Its name means "eye lizard." This is because it had very large eyes.

The animal had a strong, sleek body. It used a powerful tail to swim. The tail had a shape called a caudal fluke. This fluke helped it move through the water. Its limbs were short and rounded. These limbs helped the animal steer.

Ophthalmosaurus had a long head. It had many small but strong teeth. Scientists think it was a generalist predator. This means it ate many different kinds of small prey. Some other sea reptiles ate only soft food. Others ate large prey like turtles. Ophthalmosaurus was in the middle.

It may have been able to dive very deep. It could dive for about 20 minutes. It might reach depths of 400 meters or more. However, some studies suggest it lived in shallow water near the shore. Most fossils have been found in Europe. Some may have come from North America too.
