Mosasaurs were large reptiles that lived in the sea.

They lived during the Late Cretaceous period. This was a time long ago. They were the top predators in the ocean. This means they were the main hunters.

Mosasaur bodies were shaped like monitor lizards. But they were built for swimming. Their limbs were short paddles. They had webbing between their finger bones. Their tails were broad and strong. Many had a large fluke on the end. A fluke is a flat part of a tail. It looks like a shark's tail. They used this to push through the water.

These animals had very special teeth. Their teeth were held deep in the jaw. We call this thecodont dentition.

They did not keep the same teeth forever. They constantly shed them. New teeth grew in a special eight-stage way. This kept their mouths ready for hunting.

Mosasaur skin had small scales. These scales looked like those of a snake. Some scales were bumpy. Others were smooth. They likely had dark backs and light bellies. This is called countershading. It helps them hide in the water.
