For a long time, scientists used this name for many different animals. They used it as a "wastebasket taxon." This means they put many fossils in one group. They did this even if the animals were not close relatives. Now, many of these animals have new names. They are now in their own groups.

Most of these animals were big hunters. They had strong teeth for eating. One kind, called P. australis, was a large predator. We know this from fossils found in its gut. It had eaten fish and small sea turtles.

Scientists still study these fossils. They want to know how these sea reptiles were related. This helps us see how life in the sea changed.
