Pleurosauridae is a family of extinct reptiles. Their name comes from two Ancient Greek words. The word "pleurá" means rib or side. The word "saûros" means lizard. Together, they mean "side lizard." These animals were part of the sphenodontian group. They lived in the marine environments of Europe. They are most famous for their unique bodies.

These reptiles were highly adapted for life in the ocean. They possessed very long, snake-like bodies. To move through the water, they likely used anguilliform locomotion. This is a method of swimming where the animal moves its body in waves. Because their bodies were so long, they did not need large legs. Instead, they had reduced limbs. These small limbs were a specific adaptation for their aquatic lifestyle.

Scientists recognize two main genera within this family. The first genus is Palaeopleurosaurus. This animal lived during the Early Jurassic period. Specifically, it existed during the Toarcian stage. It is known from the Posidonia Shale in Germany. Palaeopleurosaurus is considered more primitive than its relatives. Its skull was quite similar to other sphenodontians.

The second genus is called Pleurosaurus. This animal lived later, during the Late Jurassic. Its remains have been found in both Germany and France. Pleurosaurus was much more specialized than Palaeopleurosaurus. Its skull was highly modified compared to other sphenodontians. This means its head shape had changed significantly over time. This evolution shows how the family changed as they lived in the sea.

Some studies have suggested other animals belong to this family. These include Vadasaurus and Derasmosaurus. These reptiles lived during the Late Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous. However, there is some debate about their classification. They lack the extreme body elongation that defines the other two genera. This makes them different from the classic snake-like pleurosaurs.

The history of these animals is tied to specific geological timeframes. Palaeopleurosaurus first appeared during the Toarcian. This was part of the Early Jurassic. Later, the Pleurosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic. The family eventually faced extinction. We know they disappeared by the end of the Late Jurassic period. This timeline helps paleontologists understand how marine reptiles changed.

Studying Pleurosauridae helps us understand the broader group of sphenodontians. It shows how reptiles can change their bodies to fit new homes. Moving from land to the sea requires many physical changes. The reduction of limbs and the lengthening of the body are clear examples. These fossils provide a window into the ancient oceans of Europe. They show the complex ways life adapts to marine environments.
