These ice sheets focused erosion on the inner parts of the shelf. Meanwhile, sediment deposition dominated the outer shelf. This process made the inner shelf deeper than the outer parts.

Scientists have used seismic studies to map the major geological features of the sea. The deepest basement rocks are divided into four north-trending graben systems. A graben is a depressed block of the Earth's crust bordered by faults. These four basins include the Northern and Victoria Land Basin, the Central Trough, and the Eastern Basin. The Eastern Basin is roughly the same width as the other three. These basins were formed during the Cretaceous period. This happened as the Zealandia microcontinent rifted away from Antarctica during the breakup of Gondwana.

Exploration of this frozen region has a long history. The sea is named after the British explorer James Clark Ross, who visited in 1841.
