Even though his work was great, Smith had a very difficult life. He faced many money problems and even spent time in debtors' prison in 1819. This happened because a project to sell Bath Stone failed and he could not pay his debts. He even had to sell his valuable fossil collection to the British Museum for £700. At the time, the scientific community did not always give him the credit he deserved. However, his ideas about fossils and rock layers helped lead to the idea of biological evolution. Today, we remember him for his amazing ability to map the world beneath our feet.

In 1819, Smith's financial situation became so dire that he was sent to debtors' prison.
