Training to become a professional geologist requires significant education. Students must take heavy coursework in physics, mathematics, and chemistry. They also study specific subjects like mineralogy, stratigraphy, and structural geology. Many students participate in "field camp" during the summer or January terms. This allows them to live and work in field conditions with faculty members. 
Geologists find employment in many different sectors. Many work in the energy and mining industries to locate oil, gas, or minerals. In petroleum drilling, some geologists perform mud logging to help find resources.
