In 1817, he released a revised edition of his map along with a memoir titled "Observations on the Geology of the United States of America." These works helped other scientists understand the relationship between different rock types and the land.

In his later years, Maclure focused on social and educational experiments. He traveled to Spain in 1820 to attempt to establish an agricultural college near Alicante. However, the invasion of the French army in 1823 ended his efforts there. He returned to America in 1824 and joined a utopian community in New Harmony, Indiana. There, he collaborated with the social reformer Robert Owen. Maclure worked to develop schools for manual training and industrial skills.
