Their fossils are found in Europe, North America, South America, and Africa. Scientists study them to learn about early dinosaurs. Some think they are close relatives of dinosaurs. Others think they are part of the dinosaur group.

These animals had light bodies. They had long necks and long legs. Many silesaurids had long front limbs. This means they likely walked on all four legs. This is called a quadrupedal stance. Most early dinosaurs walked on only two legs.

Silesaurids ate many different things. Some were small meat eaters. They had sharp, knife-like teeth. These teeth help them tear flesh. Other silesaurids ate plants. They had teeth shaped like leaves. Some may have even eaten small bugs. One kind, called Silesaurus, might have eaten beetles.

Their hips were also special. They had a pillar-erect hip joint. This helped them walk with a narrow gait. This is different from how most dinosaurs walked. Their teeth were set in deep sockets. These sockets were called thecodont teeth. This helped keep their teeth in place.
