It is a member of the Dicraeosauridae family. This family is a group within the larger Diplodocoidea clade. Dicraeosaurids are known for having shorter necks and smaller bodies than many other sauropods. Amargasaurus is one of the most famous members of this family. This is because its skeleton is nearly complete.

The most striking feature of Amargasaurus is its double row of tall spines. These spines grew from the neural spines of the neck and back vertebrae. From the third cervical vertebra onward, these spines were bifurcated, meaning they split into two parts. They were circular in cross section and tapered toward their tips. The tallest spines were located on the middle part of the neck. Specifically, they reached their maximum height on the 8th cervical vertebra.

Scientists have debated the purpose of these structures. Some researchers suggest they were used for defense against predators. Others believe they were used for display, such as courtship or intimidating rivals. Another hypothesis suggests the spines supported a skin sail. This would have been a large flap of skin stretched between the spines.

The anatomy of Amargasaurus followed the general sauropod body plan. It had a long neck, a long tail, and a barrel-shaped trunk. Its body was supported by four column-like legs. The neck was relatively short compared to other sauropods. In fact, the neck was 136% of the length of the dorsal vertebral column. This is longer than the neck of Brachytrachelopan, which was only 75% of its dorsal column. The neck consisted of thirteen cervical vertebrae. These vertebrae were opisthocoelous, meaning they were convex at the front and hollow at the back. This shape allowed them to form ball-and-socket joints.

Discovery of this dinosaur occurred during a major scientific expedition. In February 1984, Guillermo Rougier found the nearly complete skeleton. This was part of an expedition led by the Argentine paleontologist José Bonaparte. The team was working on the project "Jurassic and Cretaceous Terrestrial Vertebrates of South America." This project was supported by the National Geographic Society. The bones were found in the sedimentary rocks of the La Amarga Formation. This location is in the Picún Leufú Department of Neuquén Province.

For example, Dicraeosaurus lived in Tanzania. Brachytrachelopan lived in Argentina. Other more recent discoveries include Pilmatueia and Bajadasaurus. Bajadasaurus is a close relative that also had long spines. However, its spines were bowed forward and wider at the tips.

These differences show how much variety existed within the sauropod group. Amargasaurus was the first dicraeosaurid known from the Cretaceous period.

Studying Amargasaurus helps scientists understand the evolution of the Diplodocoidea. This group is characterized by box-shaped snouts and narrow teeth. Both Dicraeosaurids and Diplodocids have bifurcated neural spines. However, the spines in Dicraeosaurids like Amargasaurus were much more elongated. This specialization shows how different lineages of dinosaurs adapted to their environments. The discovery of such a complete skeleton provides a vital link in our understanding of Cretaceous life. It allows researchers to reconstruct not just bones, but the possible shapes and behaviors of these ancient animals.
