This animal was a sauropod. Most sauropods are famous for being huge. However, Amargasaurus was small for its group. It was about 10 meters long. It weighed around 2,000 kilograms.

It had a long neck and a long tail. It also had a barrel-shaped body. Its four legs were like thick columns.

The most amazing part was its neck. It had two rows of tall spines. These spines grew from the neck bones. They were called neural spines.

These spines were split into two parts. This is called being bifurcated. The tallest spines were in the middle of the neck. They could reach 24 centimeters high. Scientists have different ideas about these spines. Some think they were for defense. They might have helped fight off predators. Others think they were for display. They might have helped the dinosaur show off.

Some think the spines held up a skin sail.

Scientists found the bones in 1984. A man named Guillermo Rougier found them. He was on an expedition led by José Bonaparte. This team was looking for fossils in Argentina. They found the bones in the La Amarga Formation. This area is in the Neuquén Province.

The skeleton was almost complete. This is very rare for sauropods. It included a part of the skull. The name Amargasaurus comes from the discovery site. In Spanish, amarga means "bitter." So, the name means "bitter lizard."

Amargasaurus belonged to a family called Dicraeosauridae. This family had shorter necks than other sauropods.

The dinosaur was a herbivore. This means it only ate plants. It likely ate food at a medium height. We know this from its ear and neck bones. It lived with at least three other types of sauropods. These different dinosaurs likely ate different plants. This helped them live together without fighting for food.

Learning about Amargasaurus helps us see how diverse dinosaurs were. Most people think of sauropods as giant giants. But Amargasaurus shows they could be smaller too. It also shows they could have very strange bodies.

Its spines make it look very different from a Brachiosaurus. Even related dinosaurs like Bajadasaurus had different spines. This shows that evolution created many different shapes. Every discovery tells us a new part of the story. We are still learning how these animals lived.
