Spinosaurids were a family of large meat-eating dinosaurs.

These animals lived during the Early to Late Cretaceous period. Scientists have found their fossils in many places around the world. These locations include Africa, Europe, South America, and Asia.

They were large animals that walked on two legs. Some species were among the biggest land predators ever found. One famous member was the Spinosaurus, which could reach 15 meters in length. This dinosaur weighed as much as a huge African elephant.

Many spinosaurids had very special bodies built for life near water. This is called a semiaquatic lifestyle. Their long backbones had tall spines that pointed upward. These spines formed a large sail on their backs.

This sail might have held a layer of skin or a fatty hump. Their skulls were long, low, and narrow like a crocodile.

Their nostrils were set far back on their heads. This helped them breathe while near the water. Some species even had deep tails to help them swim through the water.

These dinosaurs used their unique bodies to find food. Their teeth were shaped like cones. These teeth had very deep roots to hold them in place. This helped them stay strong when biting down.

The tips of their jaws were shaped like a spoon. This shape is called a terminal rosette. This feature helped them grab slippery prey like fish.

While they mostly ate fish, they also ate other dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Their strong arms had three fingers. Each hand had a very large claw on the first finger.

People have been finding spinosaurid fossils for a very long time. The first tooth was found around 1820 by Gideon Mantell. In 1841, Richard Owen thought it was a crocodile.

Later, in 1912, more fossils were found in Egypt. Ernst Stromer described the Spinosaurus in 1915. Sadly, his original specimen was destroyed in 1944 during a bombing raid.

In 1983, scientists found a nearly complete skeleton in England. This was the Baryonyx. Since then, many new kinds of spinosaurids have been found in places like Niger and Spain.

We can compare spinosaurids to animals we see today. Their long, narrow heads and teeth are very much like a crocodile.

Just like a crocodile, they likely spent a lot of time in the water. Their heavy bodies and strong claws show they were powerful hunters.

Even though they lived millions of years ago, they remind us of how animals adapt to their homes. Some lived on land, while others became experts at living in the water. Their history shows us a very diverse group of giant predators.
