These animals lived during the Cretaceous period. Most of them lived on a huge land called Gondwana. Today, we find their fossils in many places. These include Africa, South America, and Europe. We also find them in Madagascar and the Indian subcontinent.

These dinosaurs had very unique bodies. They were bipeds, which means they walked on two legs. Their back legs were thick and stocky.

Their feet had three main toes that touched the ground. Most abelisaurids were between 5 and 9 meters long. One huge specimen found in Kenya might have reached 12 meters.

Their heads were very strange to look at. The skulls were often very tall but very short.

Some had bony bumps or ridges on their bone. For example, Carnotaurus had two horns above its eyes. Others, like Majungasaurus, had a single bony dome. Scientists think they used these for showing off or scaring others.

Many abelisaurids had very tiny front arms. These arms are called vestigial, meaning they were small and not very useful.

In Carnotaurus, the arms were so short they could not move their elbows. The bones in the forearm were only a small part of the upper arm. Some scientists think a genetic defect caused this change. This happened because of how certain genes work during growth.

We first learned about these dinosaurs in 1985. Scientists Jose Bonaparte and Fernando Novas named the family then.

At first, people only knew about Carnotaurus and Abelisaurus. Later, researchers found more fossils in places like France and India. This helped us understand how they lived across different lands. Now we know they were a very important part of the dinosaur world.
