Scientists find its fossils in many different places. It is one of the most famous dinosaurs ever.

This dinosaur had a very specific way it worked. It was a bipedal carnivore, which means it walked on two legs and ate meat.

It had a massive skull for its head. A long and heavy tail helped balance that big head. Its back legs were large and very powerful. The front arms were short but unusually strong for their size. Each arm had two digits with claws on them.

People have been finding these fossils for a long time. In 1874, a student named Peter T. Dotson found a tooth. In 1900, Barnum Brown found a partial skeleton in Wyoming.

Henry Fairfield Osborn named the species T. rex in 1905. He also named another skeleton Dynamosaurus imperiosus. Later, Osborn realized they were actually the same animal. He chose the name Tyrannosaurus to be the preferred name.

Many important fossils have been found in North America. One famous skeleton is named Sue.

Sue is very large and was about 85% complete. She reached her full size at age 19. Another skeleton named Stan was also very complete.

A skeleton named Scotty is reported to be very large. Some fossils are even small, like a juvenile named Jane.

These finds help us learn how the dinosaur lived.

Learning about T. rex helps us understand ancient life. It was likely an apex predator in its home. An apex predator is a top hunter in its area.

It probably ate animals like hadrosaurs or armored herbivores. Some experts once thought it was only a scavenger. A scavenger is an animal that eats things that are already dead. Most scientists now believe it was both a hunter and a scavenger. It was the largest carnivore in its environment. This makes it a very important part of science history.
