Today, we call that place western North America. The name Triceratops comes from Ancient Greek. It means "three-horned face." This name describes its most famous features.

It could grow to be about 30 feet long. It also weighed up to 12 tons. That is a very heavy weight for a land animal. Its skull was also very large compared to its body.

One huge skull was almost a third of the whole animal's length. The front of the mouth had a large beak. This beak helped the dinosaur eat. It had a special bone called a rostral bone in the beak.

Scientists have a long history of finding Triceratops fossils.

In 1887, George Lyman Cannon found some brow horns near Denver, Colorado. He sent them to a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh. At first, Marsh thought the bones belonged to a large bison.

He even gave the bones a name for a mammal. Later, Marsh found a more complete skull. This helped him realize it was a dinosaur. He then gave it the name Triceratops in 1889.

Another fossil hunter named John Bell Hatcher found many more skulls.

There has been much debate about how many species lived.

Throughout history, people have named up to seventeen different species. Some scientists thought many of these were actually the same kind. They thought the differences were just due to age or sex.

Today, most experts recognize two main species. These are Triceratops horridus and Triceratops prorsus.

Some research shows they lived at different times in the same area. This helps explain why their skulls looked different.

We can learn a lot by looking at how Triceratops lived.

Scientists also wonder why they had such big horns and frills. Some think they used them for defense. Others think they used them to show dominance or find mates.
