Pachycephalosaurus was a very famous dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period.

Its name means "thick-headed lizard" in Greek. This animal lived in what we now call western North America.

It was a herbivore, which means it ate plants to live. This dinosaur was bipedal, so it walked on two long and strong legs. It also had small arms with five fingers on each hand.

The most amazing part of this dinosaur was its skull. It had a huge bony dome on top of its head. This dome could be up to 9 inches thick.

The thick bone helped to cushion its brain. The back of the skull had bony knobs and small spikes. These spikes were likely blunt instead of being sharp. The dinosaur had a small muzzle and a pointed beak.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these bones. In 1872, Joseph Leidy named a bone fragment Tylosteus ornatus. Later, in 1931, Charles W. Gilmore named the species Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis.

In 1943, Barnum Brown and Erich Maren Schlaikjer established the genus Pachycephalosaurus. They used more complete fossils to name the group. They also named a second species called Pachycephalosaurus reinheimeri.

We know a lot about where these dinosaurs lived. Fossils have been found in Montana and Wyoming. They were also found in South Dakota and Alberta.

An adult Pachycephalosaurus was about 15 feet long. It might have weighed about 1,000 pounds.

Some scientists think the genus Stygimoloch was actually just a younger Pachycephalosaurus. They also think Dracorex might be the same animal.

As the dinosaur grew up, its head changed shape. Young dinosaurs had flatter skulls with large horns.

As they got older, the horns shrank and the dome grew. Some people think they used their heads like battering rams. This is similar to how bighorn sheep head-butt each other today.

They might have used this for defense or to fight for dominance. This helps us imagine how they lived long ago.
