Gilmore named the species Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis. In 1943, Barnum Brown and Erich Maren Schlaikjer established the genus Pachycephalosaurus. They used more complete fossils to name the group. They also named a second species called Pachycephalosaurus reinheimeri.

We know a lot about where these dinosaurs lived. Fossils have been found in Montana and Wyoming. They were also found in South Dakota and Alberta.
