Growth slowed down after that. It did not reach its full size until it was about twenty years old. Around age nine, the nasal bosses became much more pronounced. This happened when the animals reached sexual maturity. In Alaska, the cold winters even caused growth banding in their bones. This shows their growth slowed during the cold months.

Scientists have worked hard to learn about these creatures. Charles M. Sternberg found the first examples in Alberta, Canada. He discovered them in 1946 and named the genus in 1950.

Later, Wann Langston Jr. excavated more remains in the 1950s. In 1974, a teacher named Al Lakusta found a massive bonebed.

Unlike many other horned dinosaurs, they did not have long facial horns. Instead, their skulls featured massive, flattened bony bumps called bosses. One large boss sat over the nose, while a smaller one sat over the eyes. They also had a pair of horns growing from the frill. These dinosaurs used strong cheek teeth to chew tough, fibrous plants.

The structure of these bosses varies between the different species. In P. canadensis and P. perotorum, the nasal and eye bosses nearly merged. They were only separated by a narrow groove.

It also had a comb-like horn in the middle of its frill. P. perotorum was unique for having a narrow dome on the back of its nasal boss. These specific shapes helped scientists distinguish one species from another.

There are three identified species within this genus. The largest is P. canadensis. It could reach lengths of 8 meters and weigh 3,000 kilograms.

Other fossils were found at the Scabby Butte locality in the 1880s. However, the importance of these sites was not understood until after World War II. In 1974, a teacher named Al Lakusta found a large bonebed at Pipestone Creek. Between 1986 and 1989, researchers excavated this site. They found 3,500 bones and 14 skulls. This site likely represents a mass mortality event, perhaps during a river flood.

These fossils provide clues about how the dinosaurs lived in groups. The Pipestone Creek bonebed contained skeletons from four different age groups. These ranged from juveniles to full-grown adults. This suggests that Pachyrhinosaurus may have cared for their young. Some fossils also show signs of injury. A specimen named "Harvey" had severe lesions on its skull. The damage was so deep that the left side of the skull was visible. Despite this, the animal survived long enough to join a mass death assemblage.

Pachyrhinosaurus also interacted with its environment in complex ways. In Alaska, P. perotorum engaged in niche partitioning with Edmontosaurus.

This means they used different parts of the habitat to avoid direct competition. P. perotorum preferred upland environments. Meanwhile, Edmontosaurus favored lowland deltas. This allowed both types of dinosaurs to live in the same general region. By studying these different species and their habitats, paleontologists can reconstruct the ancient world of North America.
