This discovery was vital. It proved the domes were part of the skull. However, Gilmore initially thought Stegoceras was actually a type of Troodon. This shows how much our understanding changes as we find better fossils.

For many years, scientists struggled to classify Stegoceras correctly. Early researchers debated if it was related to stegosaurs or ceratopsians. In 1945, Charles M. Sternberg suggested the dome-headed dinosaurs belonged in their own family. He named this group Pachycephalosauridae. This name means "thick head lizard."

Today, pachycephalosaurs are grouped within a larger group called Marginocephalia. This group also includes the famous horned ceratopsians. Stegoceras is considered a basal member of this group. This means it represents a more primitive version compared to later pachycephalosaurs.

There are two main species recognized in the genus today. The first is Stegoceras validum, found in the Dinosaur Park and Oldman Formations.

The second is Stegoceras novomexicanum, which was named in 2011. These fossils were found in the Fruitland and Kirtland Formations of New Mexico. However, the validity of the New Mexico species is still debated. Some scientists believe it might not belong to the Stegoceras genus at all. This uncertainty is common in palaeontology when fossils are incomplete.

Scientists have many theories about why Stegoceras had such a large dome. One theory is intra-specific combat. This means the dinosaurs might have used their heads to butt against each other. Another theory is sexual display. The dome could have been used to attract mates. A third idea is species recognition. The unique shapes might have helped dinosaurs identify members of their own kind. These theories show how much we can learn from the shape of a single bone.
