The history of *Styracosaurus* discovery began in 1913. American paleontologist Charles H. Sternberg found the first fossil. He discovered a mostly complete skull along the Red Deer River in Canada. This specimen became the holotype for *Styracosaurus albertensis*. In 1935, his son Levi Sternberg returned to the site. He excavated the mandible and a nearly complete skeleton. These fossils are now part of the Dinosaur Provincial Park collection.

Many different specimens have helped scientists define the genus. In 1915, Barnum Brown collected a specimen near Steveville. This was initially called *Monoclonius*. Later, in 1937, Brown and Erich Maren Schlaikjer named it *Styracosaurus parksi*. They named it to honor the paleontologist William Parks. However, most scientists now consider *S. parksi* to be the same as *S. albertensis*. Other finds include a small, young skull found in 2008.

For example, *Styracosaurus ovatus* was named by Charles Gilmore in 1930. Its spikes were shorter and curved toward each other. In 2010, Andrew McDonald and Jack Horner reassigned it to a new genus, *Rubeosaurus*. They found it did not group with *S. albertensis* in phylogenetic analyses. This analysis is a way of studying evolutionary relationships. Since 2020, the status of *S. ovatus* has been debated again. It has been considered as its own genus or a species of *Styracosaurus* once more.
