A chauffeur named Wong found a nearly complete skeleton there. Osborn described the first species in 1924.

He named it Psittacosaurus mongoliensis. He chose the name because the snout looked like a parrot. Another scientist, William King Gregory, helped suggest the name. Osborn also thought it belonged to a new family called Psittacosauridae.

Discovery of these dinosaurs began with major expeditions in the early 20th century. In 1922, Henry Fairfield Osborn joined the Third Asiatic Expedition. This was an American Museum of Natural History project in Mongolia.

A chauffeur named Wong discovered a nearly complete skeleton. It was nicknamed the "Red Mesa skeleton." Osborn described this specimen in 1924. He named it Psittacosaurus mongoliensis.

He chose the name based on suggestions from William King Gregory. Osborn noted the short, deep snout and the lack of teeth in the premaxilla.

During these early studies, scientists debated how to classify these fossils. Osborn found another specimen called Protiguanodon mongoliense. He thought it was a separate animal in a different family. However, Gregory suggested it might just be a juvenile Psittacosaurus.

Later, more preparation showed the skeletons were very similar. They had similar tooth counts and vertebrae numbers. Eventually, many scientists decided Protiguanodon was a junior synonym. This means it was actually a species of Psittacosaurus.

Other paleontologists added to this knowledge over many decades. In 1932, Yang Zhongjian described two more species. He named Psittacosaurus osborni and Psittacosaurus tingi.

Later, Soviet expeditions in the 1940s found more material. Anatoly Rozhdestvensky also suggested that some species were synonyms of P. mongoliensis. In 1958, Yang described Psittacosaurus sinensis from the Qingshan Formation.

This species had a shorter and wider snout than others. These discoveries helped map where different species lived across Asia.

Psittacosaurus is an early offshoot of the ceratopsian branch. This is the group that includes the famous Triceratops.

While most of its close relatives lived in Asia, one relative named Aquilops lived in North America. The abundance of these fossils is so great that it has a special name. The Lower Cretaceous sediments in East Asia are called the Psittacosaurus biochron. This shows how much these dinosaurs define that specific time in Earth's history.
