Other specimens, like Ornithomimus samueli, have been found in the Dinosaur Park Formation. However, the classification of these different species has often changed as new fossils are discovered.

The history of discovering Ornithomimus is quite complex. Othniel Charles Marsh named the first species, O. velox, in 1890. He based this name on a partial hand and foot. These fossils were found by George Lyman Cannon on June 30, 1889. They came from the Denver Formation in Colorado.

At first, Marsh thought the dinosaur was an ornithopod. This changed in 1891 when Hatcher and Sullins found a partial skeleton in Wyoming. This new find helped scientists realize it was an ornithomimid instead.

In 1972, scientist Dale Russell conducted a morphometric study to solve this confusion. He used statistical measurements of bone proportions to test the animals.

His work showed that Ornithomimus and Struthiomimus were actually separate genera. Russell also created two new genera to group other fossils. He named them Archaeornithomimus and Dromiceiomimus. This helped make the classification of these dinosaurs much clearer.

Even after Russell's study, scientists continued to debate the groupings. In 2004, researchers Peter Makovicky, Yoshitsugu Kobayashi, and Phil Currie re-analyzed the data. They used new specimens to look at the relationships again. They concluded there was no reason to keep Dromiceiomimus separate. They suggested it should be a synonym of Ornithomimus edmontonicus. This means they believe those animals belong in the same group. Their findings are followed by most researchers today.

Understanding Ornithomimus helps us see the wider world of the Late Cretaceous. It shows how different types of dinosaurs adapted to their environments. The relationship between speed, diet, and feathers is a key part of dinosaur biology. By studying these animals, we learn about the complex systems of life in the past. The history of these fossils is a perfect example of how science constantly updates itself as new evidence appears.
