A scientist named Roy Chapman Andrews led an expedition in Mongolia. They found the bones in the Djadokhta Formation. In 1924, Henry Fairfield Osborn named the dinosaur. He gave it the name Oviraptor philoceratops. At first, he thought it was a type of ornithomimid. Later, Rinchen Barsbold showed it was a different family. He named this new group the Oviraptoridae.

For a long time, people thought Oviraptor was an "egg thief."

The name Oviraptor actually means "egg seizer" in Latin. This is because the first skeleton was found lying on a nest. The nest had about fifteen eggs in it. Scientists once thought the dinosaur was eating those eggs. They even thought the eggs belonged to a different dinosaur. This is how the name was chosen.

We now know that the first scientists were mistaken.

In the 1990s, many more fossils were found. These fossils showed oviraptorids sitting on their nests. They were actually brooding the eggs to keep them safe. Led by Roy Chapman Andrews, the team worked in the Djadokhta Formation of Mongolia. They found the first remains at the Bayn Dzak locality, also known as the Flaming Cliffs. In 1924, Henry Fairfield Osborn named the genus and the species Oviraptor philoceratops. Osborn initially placed the dinosaur in the Ornithomimidae family because of its toothless jaws. However, the Mongolian paleontologist Rinchen Barsbold later proved it was distinct. In 1976, Barsbold established the Oviraptoridae family to properly classify the genus.

The history of the name Oviraptor is a story of scientific correction. The name comes from Latin and means "egg seizer" or "egg thief."

This was because the holotype specimen was found lying directly over a nest of fifteen eggs. Osborn believed the dinosaur was preying on eggs from a ceratopsian dinosaur. The specific name philoceratops was meant to show a fondness for those eggs. However, scientists in the 1990s discovered many other oviraptorid specimens in nesting poses. These fossils proved that the dinosaurs were actually brooding and protecting their eggs. They were acting as parents, not as thieves.

Identifying the exact members of the Oviraptor genus has been a complex task. While many specimens were once linked to Oviraptor, most have been reassigned. For example, two specimens were moved to the genus Conchoraptor in 1986. Another well-known specimen, MPC-D 100/42, was once the main reference for the species.

However, researchers in 2002 found it actually belonged to a different group called Citipati. This is because it possessed a tall crest that the true Oviraptor lacked. Even a specimen from the Bayan Mandahu Formation in China has faced uncertainty regarding its classification. Scientists continue to debate these anatomical differences to ensure accuracy.

Oviraptor provides a crucial link in our understanding of dinosaur biology and evolution. The discovery of a juvenile specimen, AMNH 33092, found near the holotype, confirms parental care.
