Scientists have worked for over a century to classify these animals. O.C. Marsh first named the family Ornithomimidae in 1890. Rinchen Barsbold placed them in their own infraorder, Ornithomimosauria, in 1976.

In the 1990s, Thomas R. Holtz Jr. proposed a link based on the arctometatarsalian foot. This is a foot where the upper bones are pinched together for running. While this grouping was later abandoned, it helped refine how we see dinosaur evolution.

Another site with Sinornithomimus showed a high density of juveniles. This suggests they may have traveled in herds for protection from predators. A large group of different species was also found at the Bayshi Tsav locality. This might indicate that different herds traveled together to find food or nesting sites. Such social structures would have been vital for survival in the Cretaceous.

Ornithomimosaurs provide a window into the complex relationships of the dinosaur era. They connect the study of theropod evolution to the eventual rise of birds. Some researchers, like Gregory S. Paul, have even proposed they might be primitive, flightless birds.
